Narrative and Visual Design - Classroom Activity
Visual storytelling combines images, graphics, media, and visual elements to convey messages engagingly. Visual storytelling can better help viewers process and retain information.
Overview
My teammates and I improved a game to be an activity to help players can consciously integrate the visual design with the cognitive process during the activity. This activity is based on Pictionary but is shortened and simplified some steps for better application in the classroom.

Activity Principles
This activity first uses the cognitive principle, which is people will illustrate a concept in their minds based on the pictures they see, and then apply the concept to the actual images. The second is the use of the Multimedia Principle, which uses relevant images to enhance the information conveyed. Third, it also uses the Spatial Contiguity Principle to closely combine related text and images so that readers can understand how the text and images are combined.

Activity Tools
Pen & Paper
Even the best visual design does not only use one tool but multiple tools to create content to enthrall viewers, the pen and paper still have huge advantage. Becasue pen and paper are easy to get and can use wherever. The important is it is not required to have any technical devices.

Target Audience
K-12 students
Learning Goals
Students can understand cognitive processes so they can use visual design to aid learning. Students can develop teamwork cooperation.
Activity Time
8-10 Mins

Draw and Guess
-
Separate into 4 groups.
-
One person on each group is designated to be the first person to draw a picture of a random word.
-
Once they see the word, they have 5 seconds to think before they begin to draw. Once they begin drawing, they have 1 minute to finish.
-
After finishing the drawing, the second person will look at the first person’s drawing and draw a new one with his/her understanding, they also have 1 minute to finish.
-
The third person repeats.
-
Then, the last person would guess the random word to see if correct or not.
